The Best Time to Hunt Pheasants in South Dakota
Published 2/10/2009

It's safe to say that South Dakota has the best pheasant hunting in the world. Pheasants are not
native to South Dakota (or any other state) but for some reason we got lucky and now we have
millions of em. Our area is marginal farm ground, which provides adequate food sources while leaving
plenty of nesting habitat. We also "farm for the birds" which further increases our wild pheasant
population. The result is what one of our hunters referred to as the mecca of pheasant hunting.
So, when is the best time to book your hunt? Obviously there are more roosters in the general area on
opening weekend. However, more and more pheasant hunters are choosing to come later in the
season. Late season pheasant hunting can actually be better because the birds bunch up due to crops
being harvested and cover being eliminated by snow. We normally leave our crops in longer than the
neighbors, so we actually pick up thousands of birds throughout the season. The truth is, no matter
when you come out, we will have excellent pheasant hunting.
Late-season hunts are a little faster paced because the birds have been educated. So if you're looking
for a gentleman's hunt, I recommend booking early in the season. However, if you want to test your
wingshooting skills and do some "runnin-and-gunnin" I highly recommend trying a late season
pheasant hunt. Don't worry about not getting your limit because we ALWAYS shoot our limit. It might
take a few more shells, but the more times your gun goes bang the more fun you will have.
Another benefit of hunting pheasants later in the season is it's cheaper. Our rate after December 1st is
$350 per day.
So, when is the best time? If you like warmer weather, a slower-paced hunt, and a little higher quality
of entertainment in Dallas, SD, I would say come before Thanksgiving. If you don't mind the cold and
you like to hunt hard and fast, I recommend coming after Thanksgiving.
We are pretty proud of the caliber of pheasant hunt we offer at $400/$250 a day. Our guides are
some of the best in the business and do this because they love the total South Dakota pheasant
hunting experience. I am certain that if you hunt pheasants with us once, no matter if it's opening
weekend or late December, you will save the date for many years to come.
Visit our pheasant hunting page for more info or contact us today to reserve your favorite lodge (we
have 4 of them) and date.
